BIG Trout on the South Platte River

The beginning of May has brought with it some absolutely amazing fly fishing on the South Platte River.  Private and public water trips have been very productive!  We have been picking up fish on both dries and nymphs with great results. While crowds on public water contiue to grow as the weather warms, the fishing is still good.  Private water has been producing some absolute big fish to accompany high numbers of caught fish.  The Lakes in South Park have also been fishing well, when in the right spot with the right flies. Low Water Fishing on the South Platte River

As I write this the Dream Stream is at 34 cfs and Deckers is at 51.   The low water will effect the fishing and the way to you should approach the fish.  Despite the low water, fishing on the Platte still remains good.  Midges and BWOs are experiencing strong hatches.  This weekend my clients were able to get into some great fish by slinging nymph rigs into the deeper runs and riffles.  We were also able to get some fish to eat Dries.  The past week has been cold and find fish on the stillwaters has been challenging.  However, the fish that we have gotten into have been worth the wait.  With weather warming up, expect the lakes to fish better and better.  The recent snows have really helped our statewide snowpack and I am expecting a great year.  If you would like to book a trip to chase some big reservoir trout or learn streamside how to approach fish during these lower water periods, give me a call or email me.  Below are a few pics from recent trips.  719-494-6480  Tere5643@gmail.com

 

Great Start to Spring

Spring is officially here and the fish seem to know it.  Spring is without question one of the best times to catch big trout and big numbers of fish on the South Platte River. Today I had the pleasure of guiding Rob and his daughter on the North Fork of the South Platte.  In just a half day we landed close to 50 fish!   Several of which were of great size or wonderful color.  With water levels low, we were able to sight fish the whole morning and force feed some of the big fish that call the North Fork home.  In other news, if you are heading to South Park be ready to fish with other anglers.  Crowds have been VERY heavy in recent days.  If you would like to book a trip to catch some of these great spring trout, whether on public or private water, give me a call at 719-494-6480 or email me at Tere5643@gmail.com and I would be happy to set up a trip.  Here are a couple pictures from today.

Early Spring on the North Platte

Earlier in the week my buddy Tanner and I shot up to the Miracle Mile in Wyoming.  As usual, we were met with wind....lots of wind.  The wind didn't hurt the fishing at all.  With Rainbows getting into their pre spawn mode, there are a lot of fish in both the deep runs and those riffles that also have some substantial depth.  The water is gin clear and conditions couldn't be better.  The fishing will only improve in the coming weeks, which is hard to believe.  All of the typical Mile bugs produced, and produced with big numbers.   Once you find the fish, there is typically several more to follow.  Below are some pictures from our trip.

Late Winter Fishing at the Taylor

This weekend I accompanied my friends Brandon and J.P. down to the Taylor River for some late winter fishing.  It occurred to me while on the water this weekend that I am truly blessed to have so many good friends that I can share fly fishing with.  Whether its my friends that are the seasoned weekend warriors, the guys that make their living on the same waters as me, or the guys that drive 5 hours to tent camp in the snow and enjoy some cold beverages while fooling strong fish.  I want to thank you all for spending countless days on the water with me and sharing stories and good times.   Anyways, this weekend was another great time.  With low flows and winter still hanging on at the top of the canyon, the giants that the Taylor greedily gives up on occassion were no where to be seen.  That being said, we caught some great fish in the 4-7 lb range and a ton of smaller fish as well.  Nymphing the little stuff paid dividends in the deeper runs and in the riffles as the fish were starting to become more aggressive in prep for spring.  It still blows my mind how amazing the colors are on the mysis fed gluttons.  Below are some pictures from our fun weekend.  In other news, Spring is almost  here and before we know it, Rainbows and Cutthroats will start spawning on local rivers.  To book a trip to learn how to target large fish give me a  call at 719-494-6480 or shoot me an email at tere5643@gmail.com.  I am looking forward to the beginning of this new guide season and sharing the joy of catching fish on the fly with others.

South Park Snow Day

While the snow was falling heavily in South Park today, my buddy Tanner and I decided to head out and partake in some late winter fishing.  The snow fell all day, but that didn't stop us from getting into some great fish.  Nymphing was the way to go today, although there were risers taking midges off of the surface.  Sight fishing was more than difficult today with the snow falling hard.  The deep slow water resulted in the most takes to our nymph rigs.  The typical winter fare did their job well as we were able to fool quite a few fish today between the two of us, including a very nice chunk of a Rainbow and a long snakey Brown.  There were a few other anglers out today but not enough to have water taken away from you.  With spring around the corner, now is a great time to book a Guided Fly Fishing Trip to chase the big lake run Rainbows and Cutthroats that will move out of 11 Mile Reservoir and into the Dream Stream.  As a side note, check out my new article in the March/April issue of American Angler Magazine.  Below are a few pictures from today.

Great Fishing Close to Home

This morning after running some errands, I decided to head down to Deckers by myself for a little while and see if I could get any fish to eat.  I arrived shortly after 12 and only fished until 1:45 or so.  To say the least, the fishing was good.  In just a short time I was able to get a baker's dozen to net, including a really nice chunk of a Rainbow.  Fish were eating both nymphs and dries.  The fish were stacked heavy in the faster deep water and were eating pretty hard.  Midges were coming off when I got there and lasted until I left.  I hope everyone is having a great start to 2013 and I look forward to having the guide season start in full swing in the next month or so.  If you would like to book a trip for the Spring, give me a call at 719-494-6480 or email me at tere5643@gmail.com.  Below is just one of the great fish that came to hand today.
